22nd March: Workshop

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to last night’s meeting which comprised a presentation by Barry Sampson on the process he uses to copy slides, followed by our version of a ‘trade fair’ – an invitation to members to bring along any lesser-known items they use to aid their photography, plus a demonstration of our Logan Mount Cutter by Mark Buckley-Sharp.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative evening and provided an ideal opportunity to ask (or even answer!) questions about any aspect of photography.

Next week we have our last monthly projected image competition which will be judged by Pat Couder CPAGB BPE1 QPSA over Zoom.

Finally, check out our Facebook page for a few images taken at last week’s Hatch End High Street evening photography challenge on Reflections.

15th March: Annual Projected Nature and Sets of up to Seven competitions – judged by Jonathan Vaines LRPS CPAGB AFIAP

Very many thanks to Jonathan Vaines, from Cambridge Camera Club, for judging two annual projected competitions last night.  His thoughtful and informative judging made for a very enjoyable evening.  No easy task to judge two completely different formats and he did us proud.

The Sets of up to Seven competition is much more about the coherence of the set than detail of the individual images and unusually the photographer is given the opportunity to talk briefly about their set giving an insight on their thought process in putting the images together.  With fourteen sets there were a lot of images and we thank Jonathan for his helpful critiques as we went through each one.  Many congratulations to John Draper for his winning set ‘Flower Art’;  Peter Polkinghorne’s ‘Southwold Beach Hut Signs’ was second and Dave Martin’s ‘Flower Art’ third.  Highly commended were Sue Wright Uppington’s  ‘Northern Lights’, Alan Colegrave’s ‘A Camera is Just a Tool in the Artistic Process’ and Mark Buckley-Sharp’s ‘St. Stefan’.

The Winning Set

Annual Projected Nature:  Congratulations to Julia Wainwright for he winning image ‘Starling Squabble’;  Dave Martin took second and third for ‘Parasol Fungi’ and ‘Sparrowhawk Attacks Pidgeon in Back Yard’.  Highly commended were ‘Purple  Swamphen’ by Alan Graham, ‘Serval’ by John Draper and ‘Thick Billed Ravens’ by Ian Roberts.

Annual Projected Nature Winner by                                        Julia Wainwright

Thanks to everyone who took part in the competitions and came along to support the meeting over Zoom and special thanks to Jonathan for his excellent judging.  Our winners will be presented with their trophy when we are back at base. Nature and Sets’ composted images may be viewed on Facebook in due course.

Next week we have a workshop in the club, a combination of a presentation and our version of a ‘trade fair’.

Meanwhile stay safe and well and enjoy the sunshine.

8th March: Members’ Evening – High Street Photography

We love to talk about the weather……whether it will rain, whether it will be cold…….so planning a ‘shoot’ in Hatch End High Street was always going to be a gamble, especially with the challenge of taking ‘reflections’………We hoped there would be drizzle before the witching hour of 8.00pm but contrary weather decided to stay dry.  It didn’t daunt anyone though!  The challenge was to take three JPEG images with at least one element of ‘reflection’ in them along/around the High Street.  Returning to the hall the images were uploaded and in the comfort and warm  each person’s ‘set of three’ were reviewed.

It was a good exercise and a thoroughly enjoyable evening.  Everyone had the opportunity of nominating one image for display on Facebook.  These will be available in due course.

Thanks to Mark Buckley-Sharp for the technical stuff and to everyone who came along to the evening and especially those who braved the High Street!

Next week we have two projected Annual competitions:  Nature and Sets of up to Seven which will be judged by Jonathan Vaines LRPS CPAGB AFIAP from Cambridge Camera Club.

Have a good week and stay safe
