24th May: Interactive Workshop – Print Critiques Part 2

Last night we enjoyed our second evening of critiquing prints which have gone through competitions and achieved lower than expected results or received comments that required further debate.  It is a great way (some may say cathartic!) to discuss the potential reasoning behind  judges’ comments made during a competition and which have to be endured in silence!

Key learning included the importance of ‘titles’ (particularly important when entering in subject specific competitions), angle of view, check for distractions, halos and the crop.

Many thanks to everyone for contributing to another  successful and informative evening.

Next week we are back at Hatch End for our fourth open print competition which will be judged by Amanda Wright, Ealing and Hampshire House PS.

In the meantime have a good week and stay safe.

17th May: Talk – ‘The Prints and The Paper’ by Chris Palmer FRPS EFIAP DPAGB APAGB

Very many thanks to Chris for his exemplary, engaging and detailed lecture last night.

it was such a pleasure to see his prints and hear his insightful narrative as we were taken through a masterclass in photography;   his stunning landscapes lead the viewer into the picture through visual clues planned and executed in camera with his selection of paper to suit and enhance the final print.

There was so much information in his talk we’ll be processing it all for a long time and hopefully putting it into practice.  Plan, think, compose/identify ‘the picture’, engage the end viewer with visual stepping stones; take care in processing the digital image and producing the final print.

So once again  thank you Chris for an inspirational evening.
