What a great way to start our new season with a sociable, relaxed evening ‘showing’ and ‘telling’ our work in a thoroughly constructive non-competitive forum. Members were invited to bring along a few images/prints they wanted to talk about or get help with; from personal projects such as documenting a walking trip, the fascination of shadows, street photography challenges, inspiration and copyright, through to ethical questions about subject matter to name just a few subjects!
Many thanks to Mark for guiding (in the Guide hall!) us through each session and to everyone for an informative and thought-provoking evening. Special welcome thanks to our new members and new faces.
We look forward to next week’s projected image competitions, Open and Nature. We will be on Zoom and the competition will be judged by Peter A Young LRPS CPAGB AFIAP Hon.PAGB.
We hope you’re having a good summer and haven’t melted in the extreme heat! Hopefully you are having lots of opportunities to take photos. Phone cameras make life easier to capture ‘that’ photo when out and about – and a lot lighter than some camera gear!
Some meetings will be in the hall, others over Zoom so there will be a wide geographical spread of speakers and judges – some new faces and voices!
We hope you will enjoy the mix of talks, members’ evenings, workshops and competitions – there is something for everyone. Check out the programme on the tab above for more information.
Our first Members evening on 6th September is your opportunity to bring up to 6 images for discussion. Maybe you have a small project you are working on: the recent talk on photographing strangers is an example. Maybe you have technical or artistic questions which others could help with or simply want to talk about a visit you’ve made etc. Bring along prints, mounted or unmounted or projected images – put the digital images on a stick and we’ll load them on the night!
We’re looking forward to seeing you on the 6th at ‘home’ in Guide HQ, Leeway Close, Hatch End HA5 4SE- and if you’re wondering what a photo club is all about, we offer three free visits before joining…
In the meantime, have a good fortnight and stay safe.
In our last physical meeting of the year we asked Paul Burwood, Field End PS, to judge not one but two annual print competitions which he did with aplomb.
This year’s Set Subject was ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’. With no set criteria the variety of subject matter made for interesting interpretations of the subject and Paul’s critiques. Congratulations to John Draper who won the Trophy for ‘Desperate Times’; Avril Candler’s ‘Goodbye No Claims Bonus’ was second and ‘Sleeper Class’ by Alan Colegrave, third. Paul awarded two highly commended and these were Trevor Alexander’s ‘Quick Or You’ll Miss It’ and Avril’s ‘Night Work’.
Set Subject Trophy Winner by John Draper
This is the first time we have run an Annual Montage competition where images are assembled as composites from multiple individual images that relate to each other (theme, story, statement etc.). Congratulations to Julia Wainwright for her winning print ‘Dance of the Veils’; Alan Colegrave’s ‘A Red Flower Lives On………….’ was second and ‘Thames Alien’ by Trevor Alexander, third. Highly commended were Julia’s ‘Moment of Contemplation’ and Avril’s ‘On the Scrapheap’.
Montage Winning Print by Julia Wainwright
We didn’t give Paul an easy task (especially in this heatwave) and his critiques were helpful and informative. So very many thanks to Paul for his judging, to everyone who entered and those who came along last night. Images from both competitions may be seen on Facebook
Thanks to everyone for their continued support over the past season, emerging out of lockdown took courage and it is great to be able to meet up in person again.
We take this opportunity to wish Julia and Ian well with their move and every success in the future. We’ll miss them both.
Our final meeting next week is our AGM on Zoom.
Have a good summer and we’re looking forward to the start of our 2022/23 season on 6th September.
We meet on Mondays either in person at Century Bowling & Sports Club, Logan Road, Wembley, HA9 8PY OR online over Zoom. Please check the programme for details.
